Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Torii Matasuke
1860
This very early print, made when Yoshitoshi was only 21, shows him trying to
make his way in the field of actor prints, then dominated by Utagawa
Kunisada (1786-1865). It was published on the occasion of the first
performance of Kawatake Mokuami's play Kagamiyama Gonichi no Iwafuji (On
Mirror Mountain: Iwafuji at a later date) at the Ichimura Theatre in Edo in
the third month of 1860. This was a sequel to an earlier play, which
finished with the death of the evil Lady Iwafuji. In this production,
Kodanji established the tradition of playing the roles of both the ghost of
Iwafuji and Matasuke, the faithful servant of a samurai. Продолжение

Firearms had been introduced into Japan when a Portuguese blew off course

but were rarely depicted in Edo period prints, because of the ban on
depicting current or historical events within the period of the Tokugawa
regime.

Hyoshito Rinchu kills officer Riku near the Temple of the Mountain Spirit
This subject is from the Chinese novel Shuihu zhuan (The Water Margin),
known in Japanese as Suikoden, which tells of the legendary exploits of a
group of Chinese brigands during the Northern Song dynasty (1101-26). It was
retold in a popular Japanese novel illustrated by Hokusai, and was the
subject of Kuniyoshi's first set of warrior prints in 1827. Yoshitoshi had
made earlier prints based on Suikoden, and was evidently attracted by the
anti-establishment theme.
